"This prestigious National Science Foundation Center of Excellence award is the latest example of the University of Massachusetts' evolution into a world-class technological institution," said Massachusetts High Technology Council President Christopher Anderson. "Through this designation, UMASS and the Commonwealth are poised to strengthen their leadership positions in nanotechnology, an area of core competence for Massachusetts that is critical to our economic future."

"This is the third time that a state-funded matching grant has helped deliver a significant federal research and development award that will benefit UMASS and create jobs in Massachusetts. It underscores the need for the Legislature to quickly approve the Economic Stimulus II legislation and include a minimum of $10 million for the Federal Research Matching Grant fund at the John Adams Innovation Institute. By recapitalizing the matching grant fund, the Commonwealth will have a better chance in landing future federal R&D grants. The fund provides the best return on investment for the taxpayers and will serve to strengthen UMASS and the state's competitiveness in core areas of technology strength."

"On behalf of the CEO members of the Massachusetts High Technology Council, I would like to congratulate President Wilson, Chancellor Lombardi and the entire Amherst team for this tremendous honor."
